Cleveland Cavaliers Dan Gilbert called LeBron James "selfish" for his decision to seek a championship with the Miami Heat and promised the city of Cleveland an NBA title before the six-time All-Star gets one.
In an open letter to Cavaliers fans, Gilbert stressed his disappointment in James for opting to join Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. He felt the nationally televised announcement was inappropriate.
Dan Gilbert: "If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our 'motivation' to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels. I personally guarantee that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win an NBA championship before the self-titled former 'King' wins one... you can take it to the bank."
LeBron James played brilliantly for Cleveland for seven years. LeBron didn't come for a year or two... and split. He may not have brought them a championship, but he helped raise the team's profile. Gilbert should let LeBron evolve and move on.
LeBron was the face of the Cavaliers for seven years. He didn't do anything to embarrass them or take them down. He did his job. And Cleveland just didn't deliver.
Much luck to him in the MIA.
