The Help cleaned up over the weekend. It topped the box office chart with $20.5 million despite the debut of four new films (Spy Kids, Conan the Barbarian, Fright Night and One Day), three of them being in 3D. The Help has grossed $71.8 million domestically.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes came in second place in its third weekend with $16.3 million. The effects-driven sci-fi hit has amassed $133.8 million in 17 days.
As already hinted, all four new releases debuted to awful numbers. Three of these new releases — Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D, Conan the Barbarian and Fright Night — were released in 3D. Surprisingly, every film from third to seventh place at the weekend box office is a 3D release. Of those five films, only The Smurfs is holding up well.
Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D did the best of all the under-performers with $12 million (third place).
Conan the Barbarian got clubbed all the way into fourth place by the maids. The remake earned $10 million.
Fright Night scared up only $8.3 million, enough for fifth place.
One Day floundered in ninth place with $5.2 million.
Cars 2 has officially passed the $500 million mark worldwide with $501.3 million total. It surpassed the original Cars' $462 million global box office total. Cars 2 has grossed $186.9 million domestically.
