Travis McCoy lost someone he loved to AIDS over 15 years ago. The lead singer of Gym Class Heroes wasn't only saddened by the loss, he was afraid he might have been infected too.
Travis McCoy: "You think, 'Oh no, we've shared kitchen utensils.' You think, 'Will the kids at school know?'"
McCoy was only 11 or 12 at the time. When he learned in a school health program that you don't get AIDS from sharing silverware or touching someone, he had "this clarity and relief, but also enormous guilt."
Over the summer, McCoy went on a trip to South Africa, India and the Philippines. There, he met young people battling against AIDS. The footage will be used in an upcoming documentary to be aired on 166 MTV channels.
Last week, McCoy spent several days at South Beach Studios in Miami Beach writing and producing a song about his experiences. The single, "One at a Time," will be released on World AIDS Day, December 1, 2009. All proceeds will benefit Staying Alive Foundation, an AIDS charity.
Travis McCoy: "I can't put into words how I felt -- anger, sadness, a sense of wanting to help. Kids look up to my band, and if I can get them to buy a video game or particular brand of Nikes, then I hope I can get them to buy a box of condoms... I hope that when people see this documentary, it'll make them realize they can do something, whether in their own home, or their community, or on a bigger scale."
