2009 Primetime Emmys :: Recap and Review

The 61st Annual Primetime Emmy Awards‎ came and went last night. Neil Patrick Harris was a wonderful host during the festivities. NBC almost managed to tie HBO in the number of Emmys awarded Sunday night. NBC's 30 Rock won Best Comedy series, while AMC's Mad Men won Best Drama.

Harris did a great job as host, and the format change to the show was a welcome addition. This year, the show was divided up so that each category's awards (except best series and lead actors/actresses) were segregated in the same part of the show.

John Hodgman, as the official voice of the Emmys, was bloody brilliant!

The changes must have made an impression on viewers because ratings for the awards show were up this year. The show was viewed by 13.3 million viewers. The audience was the telecast's biggest since 2006.

True Blood's Michelle Forbes Talks Primetime Emmy Snubs

Michelle Forbes: "Excuse me, but fuck awards! That's not where the glory is. The glory is in the audience. That's who we tell the stories for. It's not for, with all due respect, the critics and not for the awards shows, but for the audience."

Forbes was responding to True Blood's lack of nominations at this year's Primetime Emmys. Forbes plays the insatiable maenad Maryann Forrester on the HBO summer hit.

Michelle Forbes: "She doesn't have a duality, she has a quadruple-ality. They came up with this character that is running around in evening dresses and playing in the dirt and she has mad domestic skills and a butler and then there's dancing and the food. It's been so much fun."

True Blood's second season finale airs Sunday @ 9pm on HBO.

36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards Recap

The 36th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards were broadcast last night on the CW. CBS' The Bold and the Beautiful won Outstanding Drama Series. The win ended the soap's 22-year streak without an Emmy win.

The awards show started with a song-and-dance number by host Vanessa Williams. It also featured a tribute to Sesame Street. The children's television program was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Anika Noni Rose Dishes on Disney Princesses, Emmys and J. Hud

Anika Noni Rose has been busy ... She co-starred in HBO's critically-acclaimed (and Emmy buzzworthy) series The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency ... and is featured as the voice of Disney's first African-American princess in the upcoming animated film The Princess and the Frog ...

Anika Noni Rose: "It's the most thrilling thing. It's been a dream of mine since I was a little itty-bitty person to be a Disney voice."

E!'s Marc Malkin sat down with the Tony Award winner to talk about The Princess and the Frog, the Emmys and Jennifer Hudson ...

Here's an excerpt from the interview ...

It must be a pretty intense feeling knowing you're the first African-American princess.

It's pretty amazing. For me, it means even so much more, because I have a nephew who is only 3 years old, and I will be the first princess he sees.

Are you hoping for a White House screening of the movie?

I'm ready! I mean, you look at those two little girls and they are the most beautiful creatures. You want to run up and hug them.

Let's talk about The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency. Did you read the books before getting the part of Grace Makutsi?

I had! I had read about three of the books, just randomly someone gave them to me and was like, "I think you'll like these."

What was it like filming in Botswana?

It was fantastic. [Director Anthony Minghella] had us there a lot longer than we needed to be. I was there for two months, but I only shot for 12 days. I was living in a hotel that used to be someone's house. The fact that he allowed me to be there for that amount of time really allowed me to take in what was around me.

You've won a Tony, were part of the Oscar-winning Dreamgirls and now there's Emmy buzz for No. 1 Ladies'. Are you like a good luck charm or something?

I do have to say that I'm very honored that HBO has decided to push it forward for this, because it's such a labor of love. It's nice to have someone standing behind you saying, "Look at this, pay attention to this, we love what they did."

Do you know yet if there's going to be a second season?

We don't know. I've gotten to the point where it doesn't worry me. About four or five years ago, I would have been like, "Ahh," but now I really feel like things don't always work out the way you plan, but they always work out.

Your No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency costar Jill Scott just had a baby, and your Dreamgirls costar Jennifer Hudson is pregnant. Have you offered to babysit for them already?

What is that? [Laughs] Everybody is popping out little ones. I'm just ready to bite a foot and a thigh. I love a baby thigh and foot in front of me so much.

How do you think they'll be as moms?

For a baby to come into a home where they are wanted, and they are wanted before they got there, that's a wonderful thing.

Emmys Go Back to Where They Started

Just when it seemed that the NFL had sacked the Emmys and forced them to move the ceremony up a week ... The Emmys have bounced back to their original date ...

CBS tried to avoid airing after an NFL doubleheader so it moved the Emmy telecast ... but now the network is moving it back to its original time slot after running up against another possible ratings problem ... the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards ...

Jack Sussman (CBS Entertainment Executive): "After we announced plans for September 13, MTV informed us they were locked into the same day for the Video Music Awards, with venue and sponsorship agreements in place. We had the flexibility to move; they didn't. Huge thanks to the Television Academy and [show producer] Don Mischer for quickly moving mountains to make this happen."

NFL Sacks Emmys

CBS has announced that it is moving the 61st Annual Emmy Awards up a week to avoid airing after a football doubleheader ...

Jack Sussman (Executive VP of Specials, Music and Live Events for CBS): "This is better for the live event, the broadcast and our audience at home."

The date for the Emmys was selected before the NFL released its 2009 television schedule ...

Nominees for the awards show will be announced July 16 ...

Emmys Expand Nominations

In a move designed to inject new blood into the awards show ... Emmy organizers announced that the Top 10 categories will be expanded to include an additional nominee ... Nominees in the Top 10 categories will increase from five to six ...

John Shaffner (TV Academy Chairman): "The increase in the number of nominees in these categories is a strong statement about inclusivity. It exemplifies the Television Academy's awareness of the amount of great television and fine individual work that is seen across the enormous spectrum of the television universe."

Another change announced today will alter the way ballots are cast for the series and performance categories ... Series nominations will be determined by a TV Academy-wide membership vote ... Acting categories will be voted on only by actor members ...

The new changes will be in effect for next year's Emmys ...

The mixture of five reality-competition hosts proved to be fatal ...

Sunday night's 2008 Emmy Awards became the least-watched Emmy Awards show on record ... down from the previous record-low of 12.3 million in 1990 ...

From 8 to 11pm the ABC telecast averaged 12.2 million ... down 6% from last year ...

This became the fourth straight year of ratings decline for the awards show ... In 2000 the awards show topped 20 million viewers ...

The Emmy Awards aired last night ...

This year the award show was hosted by the five nominees in the inaugural "Best Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program" ... and overall the gimmick didn't work ...

The only time it did work was when Jimmy Kimmel was presenting the "Best Host" award and made the quintet wait until "after the break" to hear the results ...

The overall winner for the night (as far as network television goes) was 30 Rock ... The series collected multiple wins for acting, writing and production ... as well as a second win for Best Comedy ...

This morning the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for the 60th Annual Emmy Awards ...

The big news was cable's takeover of the Drama categories ... Series on TNT, FX, AMC, Showtime and HBO dominated the acting and series nominees ... Equally surprising is the snubbing of Grey's Anatomy in the Best Drama category ... and the return of LOST as a Best Drama contender ...

Over on the Comedy side ... each of the five nominees had been nominated for Best Comedy series before ... but what was surprising was Desperate Housewives' lack of a nomination in that category ... as well as in the Lead Actress category ... particularly since the series returned to its ratings and creative glory last season ... However several new faces from Pushing Daisies and Samantha Who? were able to make it into the acting categories ...

In other nomination news ... Jimmy Kimmel Live's "I'm Fucking Matt Damon" song is up for Best Original Song ...

Regis Philbin to Receive Lifetime Achievement Emmy

The Daytime Emmys have announced that Regis Philbin will be this year's recipient of their lifetime achievement award ...

Peter Price (President of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences): "Regis Philbin has perfected the unscripted, spontaneous banter that has now become a staple of the talk-show genre. Dozens of shows have tried to duplicate it over the years, but no one does it better than Regis."

Philbin will be presented with the award on ABC's telecast of the 35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards airing live June 20 ...

Philbin of course is the prolific host of ABC's Live with Regis and Kelly ... and has won three Daytime Emmys in the past ... one for hosting Who Wants to Be a Millionaire ... one for hosting Live with Regis and Kelly ... and one for his work covering Walt Disney World's Christmas Day Parade special in 2006 ...

This summer Philbin will host CBS' Million Dollar Password ...

As for the show ... It was sorta blah! Kudos for the awards show going green ... But I truly hated the set design this year ... theatre-in-the-round ??? and Ryan Seacrest as the host? Ick! I guess it truly was on FOX this year (LOL) ...
