Sun-Maid recently gave the female face of their product a makeover. Muck like Betty Crocker, Aunt Jemima and Mrs. Butterworth, the Sun-Maid Raisin Girl was given a full makeover that has transformed her from a young, early 20th-century girl to a buxom, modern young woman. The change has sparked a controversy that has led some to say the new raisin girl "looks like a Barbie Doll in Amish attire."
Although the look of the raisin girl has been getting lots of attention recently, the changes to the 90-year-old icon were made three years ago. The changes were made by the inspiration to educate consumers about healthy living choices.
Barry Kriebel (Sun-Maid President): "This is as good a time as any to get on the wave of health and nutrition. You're not going to see her dancing or kicking up her heels out in the vineyard, but have her do what is appropriate for her to do, based on her history but also being a contemporary person living in the 21st century."
There have been talks of giving the new Sun-Maid girl a name and featuring her in future ads doing things modern women typically do (i.e. going to the gym, shopping at the market and speaking multiple languages.)
The image on all Sun-Maid product packaging will remain the same. The new version will only appear in product advertisements.
